Yates Center, KS

Yates Center is a Woodson County city and county seat in southeastern Kansas. The town was founded in 1875 and named for Abner Yates, who donated land for the courthouse, churches, and city park. Woodson County selected the site as its seat before a house stood there, giving the city an unusually deliberate civic beginning. The original grid was planned around a courthouse square, and Main Street still opens into that square at the center of town. Roads from the surrounding prairie converge on Yates Center as the county's civic and service hub.

The Woodson County Courthouse stands inside the Yates Center Courthouse Square Historic District, which includes dozens of brick and sandstone commercial buildings around the square. City offices, the water department, parks, and police department continue to operate from this compact center, while Woodson USD 366 serves local students. Historic buildings, the courthouse, and the square give Yates Center a strong visual core; beyond it, the city quickly meets the fields and open country of Woodson County. Yates Center reads as a county-seat town built around a square, with the old plan still organizing the center.
