Yatesville, PA

Yatesville is a Luzerne County borough in the Greater Pittston area, a short distance from the Susquehanna and the old anthracite coal fields. Joel Hale built the first frame house on the borough site in 1809, and the settlement later took its name from Francis Yates, an English immigrant associated with the area. A schoolhouse stood here by 1851, and railroads, stores, and the Pennsylvania Coal Company’s water reservoir followed as Pittston’s mining region expanded.

Today Yatesville is closely tied to the Pittston Area School District, whose high school sits in the borough and serves students from several nearby communities. Local roads connect residents with Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and the broader Wyoming Valley, while older homes and church buildings keep the borough’s nineteenth-century outline visible. The former mining landscape is still part of the ground beneath the streets, but daily life now turns on schools, commutes, neighborhood services, and regional employment. Yatesville is a small borough with a long relationship to Pittston and the valley’s coal-and-rail history.
