Zayante, CA

Zayante is a census-designated place in Santa Cruz County, set along Zayante Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The 2020 census counted 729 residents, and the community sits at about 699 feet above sea level. Zayante is a residential mountain place, with roads following the creek and homes spread through a wooded valley between the San Lorenzo River country and the larger Santa Cruz region. Zayante Road is the practical route through this part of the mountains, linking homes, creek crossings, and nearby valley communities.

The name reaches back to Rancho Zayante and the creek itself. In 1841, an early mill was built on Zayante Creek near its entry to the San Lorenzo River, part of a mountain economy that later included lumber, fruit, and small roadside businesses. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park preserves nearby landscapes tied to the old Rancho Zayante and the region's early mills and lime works. Zayante's local picture is therefore made from creek water, redwood hills, ranch history, and the winding roads that connect a scattered community to Santa Cruz County's valley towns.
