Zilwaukee, MI

Zilwaukee Township follows the Saginaw River through northern Saginaw County, with Crow Island State Game Area covering a broad stretch of marsh, forest, cropland, and wetland habitat. The township was organized in 1854, when its boundaries included much more land than they do now; later townships and county lines pared the map down. Early settlement gathered around sawmills, wharves, warehouses, and the river, then shifted toward farming and industry as the valley was drained and transportation improved. The nearby city of Zilwaukee is a separate municipality, even though both names point to the same river corridor.

Today the township’s outdoor side is the big draw. Crow Island offers birding, wildlife viewing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, nature trails, and seasonal waterfowl hunting, while Veteran’s Memorial Park follows the Saginaw River for a mile and a half along M-13. The high Zilwaukee Bridge and the river’s working shoreline add an unmistakable piece of infrastructure to the landscape. Township life here is a mix of wetlands, farmland, highways, and river access—a place where the map shifts quickly from marsh habitat to bridge traffic to the older Saginaw Valley settlement pattern.
