About This Ranking

Goal

Highlight places where fewer residents live with road, rail, and aircraft noise at home, by the federal transportation noise map at each Census block. Modeled, not measured.

Data behind the rating

1 source

BTS National Transportation Noise Map

2022 edition: 2022 flights and trains, 2023 road traffic; released May 2026
Data
Modeled 24-hour average road, rail, and aircraft noise on a 30-meter grid, mapped down to 45 dB, from federal traffic counts, rail crossing records, transit schedules, and FAA flight data.
What it tells us
Shows how many residents live where transportation noise is modeled to be loud, not what anyone hears at a particular home.
