Algonquin, IL

Algonquin began as a river crossing. Dr. Andrew Cornish operated a ferry over the Fox River, and the settlement successively used the names Cornish Ferry, Cornishville, and Osceola. When postal officials found another Illinois community already called Osceola, landowner Samuel Edwards selected Algonquin, the name of a ship with which he had been associated; it became official on December 23, 1847. The Fox still organizes Old Town. Cornish Park places a playground, fishing access, canoe and kayak launch, gazebo, paths, and historical markers beside the river, while nearby Riverfront Park adds another launch, fishing area, basketball court, picnic space, and walking connections to Main Street. Towne Park turns the same history into a busy gathering place. Its 14 acres include Crystal Creek, natural areas, a custom play space, pavilion and restrooms, and a performance stage completed during a $5.7 million redevelopment.

The Prairie Trail crosses the park, linking Old Town to the wider McHenry County trail network without requiring a car trip. In 2026, the village scheduled Thursday evening summer concerts from June through August, children's lunchtime performances, an outdoor movie, Unplug Illinois activities, National Night Out on Main Street, and Shakespeare in the Park. Those programs use parks and streets as shared venues rather than reserving civic life for a single building. Newer neighborhoods and commercial areas extend well beyond the river, but the ferry story, Main Street, three adjoining Old Town parks, and the regional trail keep the original crossing central to how residents gather and move through the village.
