Alsip, IL

Tucked into Chicago's southwest suburbs, Alsip started out in the 1880s as a brickmaking hub along the railroad. While those old clay pits have long since been turned into residential neighborhoods and business parks, the village holds some remarkable regional history. It is home to Burr Oak Cemetery, established in 1927 as one of the area's few Black-owned cemeteries during segregation. The grounds serve as the resting place for civil rights icons Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley, as well as blues legends Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington. Just up the road, Restvale Cemetery adds to that musical legacy, making the town a meaningful stop in Chicago's blues and jazz heritage.

Today, Alsip is a practical, working suburb with a straightforward layout. Most everyday retail, groceries, and casual dining line Cicero Avenue, Pulaski Road, and 127th Street. Because major rail lines, Interstate 294, and light industrial districts weave through town, day-to-day life can feel noticeably different from one street to the next. Some subdivisions sit tucked away on quiet residential lanes, while others are closer to truck routes or highway ramps, so visiting a prospective neighborhood during peak hours is a good idea. Drivers enjoy quick access to the Tri-State Tollway, while Pace bus routes connect commuters to shopping centers and the Midway transit hub.

Outdoor recreation centers largely on the Cal-Sag Channel, which borders the village and brings open space and water views to the area. The Cal-Sag Trail runs right along the channel, offering miles of paved multi-use paths for biking, running, and walking. Boaters and kayakers can get out on the water from Howe’s Landing between spring and fall, while the Mary Schmidt Sanctuary offers scenic walking paths nearby. For day-to-day activities, the local park district hosts community sports, playgrounds, and seasonal events like summer concerts, while the Alsip-Merrionette Park Library serves as a welcoming community hub.
