Avis, PA

Avis is a Clinton County borough on the north side of the West Branch Susquehanna valley, with U.S. 220 running along its southern edge. The county’s own name-change list remembers Avis as Oak Grove, while local historical work places the settlement’s growth around the start of the 20th century and its borough incorporation in 1908. That is a good clue to the place: a river-valley community that took shape before the modern freeway map arrived.

Today Exit 118 and Exit 120 connect Avis to U.S. 220, with Jersey Shore three miles east, Lock Haven eight miles west, and Williamsport farther along the valley. The borough itself stays compact, its streets and Central Avenue sitting between the road corridor and the hills beyond. Lock Haven’s county-seat role is close enough to shape errands without swallowing the borough’s own address. Avis is close to bigger routes without losing the feel of a small Central Pennsylvania settlement whose older name still sits underneath the newer one.
