About Bantam

Bantam is a borough within the town of Litchfield, a separate local government with its own hall, burgesses, meetings, and civic calendar. The name reaches back to the Native American name recorded for the Litchfield area, while the borough itself was incorporated in 1915. Bantam’s larger map includes Bantam Lake, the largest natural lake in Connecticut, and Route 209, where the borough’s civic playing field sits. Much of the area’s older history is kept through the Litchfield Historical Society, whose museum covers Bantam along with the town’s other villages. The local shorthand is borough hall, Bantam Lake, Route 209, and Litchfield’s western village.
