Bear Dance, MT

Bear Dance sits on the east bank of Flathead Lake along Montana Highway 35, about 22 miles northeast of Polson and 11 miles south of Bigfork. The community’s name came in 1891 after J. S. and Mrs. Robbins stopped during a wagon trip and learned that a bear had been killed nearby. The meat was shared, and neighbors held a dance; the Robbins gave the place its name. It is a story that matches the setting: Bear Dance is defined by a long lakeshore, a road that follows it, and the small collection of places that serve people moving along the east side.

Bear Dance Campground is on the only Flathead Forest lakefront property, and the Bear Dance trailhead off Highway 35 gives the area a direct route into the lakeside landscape. Polson and Bigfork are the local bearings, but the lake is the dominant one: it sets the western edge, the road’s direction, and the area’s recreation pattern. Bear Dance is a small CDP whose memorable details are unusually specific—a bear shared out, a dance named after it, and a campground and trailhead carrying that name forward.
