Betterton, MD

Perched on wooded bluffs above the upper Chesapeake Bay, Betterton is a quiet town tucked along the mouth of the Sassafras River. Home to roughly 300 residents, this Kent County community sits about fifteen miles north of Chestertown. Steep, tree-lined streets slope directly down toward the water, leading to a sandy public beach that offers wide open views and easy access for swimming and paddling.

The town grew into a popular summer retreat in the late 1800s, when visitors arrived by steamboat to relax along the shore. Many of those classic Victorian cottages and wrap-around porches still stand today, giving the neighborhood plenty of vintage coastal character. Daily life here centers on boating, sunset walks, and a relaxed Eastern Shore rhythm that appeals to anyone looking for peace and quiet near the water.
