Big Sandy, MT

Big Sandy began with the railroad's arrival in 1887, when the St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba line opened a town named for nearby Big Sandy Creek. Chouteau County's town sits on U.S. Route 87 along the Lewis and Clark Trail, in Montana's Golden Triangle wheat-and-barley country. The 2020 census counted 605 residents. The town's early cattle-and-freight role gave way to a farm economy, and the Big Sandy Montana Historical Society keeps that change visible in a museum built around local photographs and objects.

Current town life is arranged around a small but distinct civic and recreation map. The town lists City Hall, volunteer fire, medical clinic, and county-sheriff contacts, while Paul Williams Memorial Park and rest stop sits beside U.S. 87 with a playground, picnic shelter, and seasonal restrooms. Big Sandy's skate park, swimming pool, and splash pad add youth and summer facilities. The historical museum's community room hosts events such as the annual Memorial Day breakfast, tying the railroad-and-farm past to a current Main Street calendar.
