Boulder, MT

Boulder is Jefferson County’s seat on the north bank of the Boulder River, midway between Butte and Helena. The valley’s large rocks gave it its name, and the Boulder Batholith sits beneath the hills around town. Boulder began as a stagecoach station on the Fort Benton–Virginia City route in the 1860s. Gold, copper, lead, zinc, and silver drew miners into nearby districts, and the Great Northern Railway reached town in 1888. The courthouse and county offices now make Boulder the government center for a county that also includes ranching areas, mining country, and smaller communities such as Basin and Clancy.

Boulder’s work history is still visible. It served farmers, ranchers, and miners in the valley, and the town grew around the Elkhorn, Comet, and Baltimore mining districts. Jefferson County’s established economic mix includes agriculture, mining, timber, tourism, retail, and county and state government. State institutions also appear in the town’s work map, including services for people with developmental disabilities and youth, alongside county offices and small retail businesses near the courthouse. That mix is visible from Main Street. Boulder Hot Springs carries forward the area’s geothermal history as a resort, and Elkhorn State Park preserves two buildings from the nearby silver-mining town. Those pieces put government, working land, mining history, and hot-springs tourism in the same small valley.

Students from Basin, Clancy, Jefferson City, and Montana City attend Jefferson High School District #1, whose high school sits on South Main and covers about 1,100 square miles. The school runs theater productions and career classes in welding, drafting, culinary arts, and small-business development. Boulder Community Library serves the wider county, and a Thursday farmers market runs from July through September. The county fair and rodeo, the river, and the old courthouse complete that map: a small seat of government serving a much larger ranch-and-mining hinterland.
