Helena, MT

Last Chance Gulch is both Helena's founding site and part of its present downtown. Four prospectors found gold there in July 1864, and the road through the old gulch became a pedestrian mall in 1978. The mining camp became the Montana territorial capital in 1875 and retained the capital role after statehood. Gold wealth was concentrated enough that roughly 50 millionaires lived in Helena by 1888, helping finance the elaborate Victorian buildings that still mark the center. The Guardian of the Gulch fire tower, built in 1886, continues to overlook downtown. Helena counted 32,091 residents in the 2020 census, and the Montana State Capitol is the center of the city's statewide administrative role. The developed city meets an unusually large municipal open-space system at the South Hills.

Helena manages 30 parks and more than 1,950 acres of undeveloped parkland, including Mount Helena City Park. Centennial Trail provides nearly three miles of walking path with links to several parks and landmarks, while Centennial Park contains a free 10,000-square-foot skatepark. Last Chance Splash combines a 50-meter pool dating to 1953 with a zero-depth entry pool, lazy river, slides, and splash deck added during a 2009 renovation. The Lewis & Clark Library's 2026 summer schedule extends beyond its downtown building through storytimes in parks, a mobile library with Wi-Fi, adult craft sessions, and a walking book group at Centennial Park. For trips that are not practical on foot, Capital Transit runs weekday curb-to-curb service within city limits and lets riders schedule and track trips through an app.
