Browning, MT

Browning is a Glacier County CDP and the headquarters of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, set along the east side of the Rocky Mountain Front. It was named in 1885 for Daniel M. Browning, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, and was once the only incorporated town on the reservation. Today the community's role is larger than its municipal label: Blackfeet tribal offices, health services, businesses, schools, and Blackfeet Community College all meet here. U.S. 2 and U.S. 89 put Browning on the main road system between Glacier National Park, the reservation, and the plains.

Education gives the town another center of gravity. Browning Public Schools serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, and Blackfeet Community College adds tribally controlled higher education with programs tied to employment, community learning, and Blackfeet culture and language. Browning's landscape can turn from open reservation country to dramatic mountain views in a short drive, but the everyday story is grounded in the institutions people use: school, college, tribal services, health care, and local businesses. It is a place where the reservation's civic, cultural, and educational life is visible on the street.
