Bull Lake, MT

Bull Lake is a small census-designated place wrapped around its namesake lake in southwestern Lincoln County, Montana. The 2020 census counted 180 residents. Montana Highway 56 follows the lake’s east side, running north toward Troy in the Kootenai River valley and south toward Montana 200 in the Clark Fork valley. The CDP first appeared on the census map before 2020, so its civic footprint is new even though the lake and mountain roads have long shaped the area.

Water, forest, and wildlife carry the daily story here. Bull Lake sits beside the Bull River Wildlife Management Area, where Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks protects wetland and riparian habitat and a travel corridor between the Cabinet Mountains. Residents and visitors use the lake country for boating, fishing, wildlife watching, and access to back roads and trails; the highway connects the homes around the shore to Troy, Libby, and the Clark Fork. There is no downtown grid to organize the place; the lake, highway, private roads, and wildlife lands do that work.
