Burlington, VT

Burlington sits right on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, rising steadily from the water up toward the Green Mountains in the distance. Down along the shoreline, Waterfront Park connects directly to the Burlington Greenway, an eight-mile paved path where locals walk, run, and bike along the lake. Following the trail north takes you out onto a scenic causeway with wide-open water views and a seasonal bike ferry that connects over to the Champlain Islands. A few blocks up the hill, the brick-paved Church Street Marketplace is filled with outdoor dining, local shops, street performers, and coffee spots. Further up the slope, the University of Vermont campus and medical center anchor the top of the hill, creating a compact layout that flows easily from the lakefront to downtown.

The city originated as a busy shipping port on the lake, but today it revolves around a relaxed, community-oriented pace. Turning Church Street into a car-free pedestrian marketplace transformed the center of town into an everyday gathering spot where neighbors run into each other for lunch or an evening drink. Surrounding streets branch off into historic residential neighborhoods with classic New England architecture, tree-lined sidewalks, and quiet blocks within easy walking distance of the center. On weekends, you can browse the local farmers market, explore art galleries and craft breweries in the South End, or catch the sunset over the Adirondacks from the waterfront.

As the home of UVM and the state's largest hospital network, Burlington draws a steady population of students, healthcare workers, researchers, and young families. Having a major university and a Level I trauma center in town provides stable career opportunities and high-level medical care that is hard to find in a community of this size. That college presence also brings a lot of creative energy to the city, supporting independent bookstores, cozy cafes, and local arts. The historic Flynn theater, live music in City Hall Park, and events like the Discover Jazz Festival keep the local cultural calendar busy throughout the year.

Burlington is also well known for its environmental focus, having become one of the first cities in the country to power its municipal electric grid completely from renewable sources like hydro, wind, and biomass. That green mindset carries over into everyday life, from citywide composting and community gardens to food co-ops and restaurants focused on local Vermont farms. With paddleboarding and sailing on the lake in the summer and easy access to major ski resorts in the winter, it offers a great blend of small-city amenities and four-season outdoor living.
