Caledonia, NY

Caledonia is a Livingston County village southwest of Rochester, set along the Genesee River near the county's northwestern edge on the western side. The 2020 census counted 2,275 residents in the village. The village sits inside the larger Town of Caledonia, so local maps carry two Caledonias at once: the built-up village center and the surrounding rural town. New York Route 5 runs through the village, linking it east toward Rochester and west toward Batavia. The defining local institution is the Caledonia Fish Hatchery, founded in 1864 by Seth Green, a pioneer of fish culture.

It is widely described as the oldest fish hatchery in the Western Hemisphere and still raises brown and rainbow trout. That history shows up in the village's relationship with the Genesee and the region's fishing culture.
