Canaan, CT

Tucked into Connecticut's quiet northwest corner, Canaan serves as the walkable commercial center of North Canaan. The village originally grew around a busy 19th-century railroad junction where two major train lines met to haul regional limestone, iron, and dairy products. The landmark Canaan Union Depot still stands at the center of it all, giving the downtown area an easygoing charm rooted in its railroad past.

Life here moves at a relaxed pace, with Victorian-era homes, local shops, and neighborhood eateries clustered near the Blackberry River. Sitting right at the intersection of Routes 7 and 44, the village makes it easy to commute or explore the surrounding Litchfield Hills and Berkshires. One helpful tip for newcomers: the village of Canaan is part of North Canaan, making it distinct from the neighboring town also called Canaan, which locals refer to as Falls Village.
