Cayuga, NY

Cayuga sits on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in the Town of Aurelius, a small village of 472 people in the 2020 census. Its name comes from the Cayuga people and the lake beside it, placing the community within the history of the Haudenosaunee homeland of central New York. The Sullivan-Clinton Campaign passed through the region in 1779, a violent chapter that damaged Cayuga communities, homes, food stores, and fields. The village was incorporated in 1857 and re-incorporated in 1874, and today New York Route 90 follows the lakeside corridor.

The water remains the clearest geographic marker: northern Cayuga Lake narrows into a shallow, wetland-rich end, while the village faces the broader lake landscape to the south. Cayuga is served by the Union Springs Central School District, and several properties in and around the village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a small place with a deep local timeline, where lake geography, Indigenous history, nineteenth-century settlement, and present-day school and road connections meet within a few miles.
