Centreville, MI

Centreville is the seat of St. Joseph County, and its story starts with Thomas W. Langley’s 1831 tavern. Langley soon added a hotel, store, mill, post office, school, and church services, giving the new village a whole working center before Centreville incorporated in 1837. The county courthouse followed in 1842, and the village’s central location has kept it in the county-seat role. A covered bridge and older county buildings add to the historic map. The local shorthand is tavern first, courthouse next, and a southwest Michigan village that grew into the county’s civic center.
