About Chelsea

Chelsea is the primary village and CDP in the town of Chelsea, Orange County, where the 2020 census counted 342 residents in the CDP. The village sits in the valley of the First Branch of the White River, at the center of the town and the county seat. Its two commons, courthouse, church, library, and Main Street buildings form the historic core of Orange County’s shire town.

Chelsea Village Historic District was listed on the National Register in 1983, reflecting the Greek Revival buildings and civic streets that grew during the nineteenth century. Vermont Route 110 follows the river valley, while Route 113 begins in the village and heads toward the Connecticut River. First Branch Unified District serves Chelsea and Tunbridge, with the Chelsea campus covering pre-K and grades 5–8 and the Tunbridge campus serving kindergarten through fourth grade. Chelsea’s village center still gathers county government, school routines, river roads, and the older architecture of a Vermont shire town. The town green and public buildings make the county-seat role visible at street level.
