Chesilhurst, NJ

Chesilhurst is a small Camden County borough between Waterford and Winslow townships, in the wooded Pine Barrens edge of South Jersey. The 2020 census counted 1,536 residents. The borough was carved from those townships after an 1887 referendum and incorporated on November 26 of that year. That date matters because Chesilhurst's map is a municipal pocket: a local government and school district set inside the larger township landscape, with roads and services doing the work of a traditional town center.

Shirley B. Foster Elementary School serves young students locally, and the borough's streets meet the roads of Waterford and Winslow almost immediately. Chesilhurst is a self-governing pocket surrounded by the broader South Jersey road network; commercial and school trips spill into neighboring townships. Its story is one of municipal choice—residents separated a piece of two townships in 1887 and kept that local boundary on the map. The boundary is the memorable part: a borough made from two township pieces, still surrounded by both.
