Chester, MT

Chester is Liberty County’s seat on U.S. 2, a Hi-Line town where county government, agriculture, school, and health services meet. The surrounding country carries a much older Indigenous history: Blackfoot, Piegan Blackfeet, and Blood people traveled through the region along the Old North Trail, and the Sweet Grass Hills remain spiritually significant to Native communities. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in July 1806 while tracing the Marias River and the country around today’s Lake Elwell.

Chester’s present economy is built largely on cereal and pulse crops, grazing, county work, Logan Health-Chester, and Chester-Joplin-Inverness Public Schools. The Liberty County Museum occupies a former Methodist/Episcopal church and preserves material from homesteading, farming, ranching, businesses, the railroad, and local families. Fifteen miles southwest, Tiber Dam and Lake Elwell bring boating, camping, fishing, and winter ice fishing into the town’s orbit. The Sweet Grass Hills rise to the north, giving Chester a distinctive horizon and a reminder that the town’s working landscape carries cultural, agricultural, and geological weight at once.
