Chester, VT

Chester's census-designated place is really three Vermont places gathered under one statistical boundary: the central village, Chester Depot, and North Chester. The 2010 count was 1,005. The arrangement makes sense once you see the railroad tracks separating the Depot from the town center and the Williams River running through the broader setting. Route 11 and Route 103 tie the pieces together, while the Green Mountains give the whole CDP its larger shape. Chester feels less like one single strip of houses than a town with several historic front doors.

Railroad history is the local through-line. The first public train reached Chester Depot in 1849, the present brick station followed after an 1871 fire, and Vermont Rail System now runs freight on the line with occasional scenic rides. North Chester's Stone Village adds a row of stone houses and a church built in the 1830s and 1840s from nearby Mount Flamstead stone. The village green, Depot station, Yosemite Firehouse, and Stone Village are all tied together by local walking tours. For everyday life, Chester has shops, restaurants, town offices, and nearby ski-country roads; for anyone passing through, the giveaway is the unusual fact that one community comes with three distinct centers.
