Chinle, AZ

Chinle is an Apache County census-designated place on Navajo Nation land at the mouth of Canyon de Chelly. The 2020 census counted 4,573 residents. The Chinle Chapter House provides the local Navajo government address, while Chinle Unified School District's schools, Northern Arizona University instructional site, trading posts, and main roads give the community its regional role. Canyon de Chelly National Monument begins at the edge of town, making the road toward the canyon part of everyday work, school, tourism, and cultural life.

The Navajo name Ch'ini'li means “where the water flows out,” referring to the point where water leaves Canyon de Chelly. The chapter describes Chinle as a community reestablished after Navajo people returned from the Long Walk; Thunderbird Lodge was the first trading post, Lady of Fatima Catholic Church the first mission, and Chinle Boarding School the first school. Families still live and farm inside the canyon, while Chinle handles the gateway work through lodging, guides, schools, stores, and chapter services.
