Chinook, MT

Set along the Milk River on northern Montana’s Hi-Line, Chinook has deep agricultural roots that started when the railroad arrived in the late 1800s. As the Blaine County seat, it grew up around cattle ranching, grain farming, and sugar beets. That farming heritage is still celebrated everywhere in town, right down to the local high school sports teams proudly playing as the Sugarbeeters. Today, daily life moves at a relaxed, steady pace shaped by wide-open prairie skies and friendly neighbors.

Downtown holds plenty of small-town character, with the Blaine County Museum, a wildlife museum, and the local library all clustered right along the main drag. About sixteen miles south lies Bear Paw Battlefield, the historic site where Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce made their final stand in 1877. With National Park Service staff based in town and endless big sky surrounding it, Chinook gives newcomers a quiet, grounded taste of rural Montana.
