About Clifton

Clifton is Greenlee County's seat in a narrow canyon where Chase Creek meets the San Francisco River. The town began in 1873 as miners settled around copper prospects; the Longfellow Copper Mining Company built a larger smelter in 1874, and the mining story has been the town's main plot ever since. Greenlee County chose Clifton as its seat when the county formed in 1909. U.S. 191, the Arizona Eastern Railway, and the old courthouse-and-industrial grid keep that history visible. The 1983 copper strike is another local chapter, but the short version is canyon town, copper, county seat, and river.
