Tanque Verde, AZ

Tanque Verde spreads homes across more than 32 square miles between the Santa Catalina and Rincon mountains. The 2020 census counted 16,250 people, about 503 per square mile, down from 16,901 in 2010. That low-density pattern is paired with unusually stable housing tenure: estimates for 2020 through 2024 put owner occupancy at 96 percent and found 94 percent of residents living in the same home as a year earlier. The median owner-occupied value was $607,900, monthly costs were $2,377 for mortgage holders, and median gross rent was $1,347. During 2020 through 2024, residents age 65 or older made up 34 percent of the population. Median household income was $121,599, poverty was 2 percent, and workers averaged nearly 29 minutes of travel to work. Agua Caliente Park provides the valley's most distinctive public gathering place.

The 101-acre county park centers on a warm spring and pond surrounded by desert and riparian habitat. Accessible paved and gravel paths pass interpretive signs, picnic sites, and the restored 1870s Ranch House, which now serves as a visitor center and art gallery. County staff and volunteers schedule wildlife walks, natural-history tours, environmental programs, and an annual speaker series there. The pond is for observation rather than swimming or fishing, and part of the spring and stream area remains fenced during restoration after a lightning fire. For access farther into the mountains, the nearby Agua Caliente Hill South trailhead serves hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians entering the Coronado National Forest trail system. These amenities make the area's open desert and mountain edges usable public spaces, not simply a backdrop to its widely separated homes.
