Cottonwood Heights, UT

Tucked right against the Wasatch foothills, Cottonwood Heights is known locally as the "City between the Canyons." Living here puts Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons practically in your backyard, with world-class skiing at Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, and Brighton just a short drive away. The main tradeoff for that mountain access is winter traffic. On heavy snow days, ski traffic quickly fills Wasatch Boulevard and Fort Union Boulevard, so locals quickly learn to monitor canyon road alerts or catch the ski bus from nearby park-and-ride lots.

The area started as a scattering of nineteenth-century farming settlements known as Union and Butler Bench, supporting orchards, gravel pits, and an early paper mill along the creek. Most of the residential neighborhoods grew during the 1950s, which gives the city an established feel with mature trees, sturdy brick ramblers, and newer custom homes higher up the bench. Though Cottonwood Heights did not incorporate as an official city until 2005, that history still shows up in places like the historic Old Mill and neighborhood green spaces shaped around old quarry sites.

Alongside its residential streets, the city has a substantial office and commercial footprint. Business hubs like Cottonwood Corporate Center and Union Park host major regional employers in software, healthcare, and corporate management. Daily errands center around Fort Union Boulevard and the Park Centre area, where you will find grocery stores, casual dining, coffee shops, and retail centers. It provides easy day-to-day shopping without needing to leave town, though the corridor stays busy with a mix of local shoppers, office workers, and canyon travelers.

Community recreation is anchored by the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center, a massive facility with indoor and outdoor pools, an Olympic-size ice arena, a gym, and sports programs for all ages. Right next door, Butler Park hosts Butlerville Days every July, bringing the city together for a weekend of parades, carnival rides, live music, and fireworks. Down the hill, Mill Hollow Park offers walking paths, playing fields, and a shaded playground tucked below steep hillsides, giving residents great outdoor spaces without leaving the neighborhood.
