Crainville, IL

Crainville is a Williamson County village that began with a railroad station in the farming and coal country of southern Illinois. The 2020 census counted 1,443 residents. Members of the Crain family entered land in the area between 1834 and 1854, after Jasper Crain had settled in the county in 1816. When the Carbondale and Shawneetown Railroad built a station, stores and a mill followed. The first plat was called Crain City, and the village incorporated as Crainville on June 28, 1881. A post office opened in 1888 and operated until 1914.

Crainville grew alongside the early mining communities that shaped Williamson County, but its own map remained tied to the station, farm roads, and the Crain family name. Carterville is close by, and Marion remains the larger county center, so the village sits inside a regional network of former company towns and coal-era settlements. The railroad is no longer the daily engine it was in the 1800s, yet its line still shows why Crainville is where it is and why the village developed southwest of the station. Crainville is a small southern Illinois place with a family name, a rail origin, and a coal-country past just under the surface.
