Dane, WI

Dane is a Dane County village north of Madison, located inside the Town of Dane and folded into the Madison metro without losing its own Main Street identity. The 2020 census counted 1,117 residents. A post office arrived in 1844, and the village took its name from Nathan Dane, the Massachusetts statesman associated with the Northwest Ordinance. Wisconsin Highway 113 runs east-west through the village, serving as Main Street and the easiest way to understand its place in the county. The highway heads north to Lodi and south to Waunakee.

Village life is small-scale but organized: a central business strip, local groups and events, parks, and the nearby farm roads that lead toward Lodi, Waunakee, and Madison. Lake Melvin Park adds fishing and open space, while the surrounding Town of Dane keeps the village tied to a wider rural landscape. Dane's local scoop is a Madison-area village with a very literal county name, a state highway through its middle, and enough local structure to feel like its own place.
