Darien, IL

Darien doesn't have a traditional, walk-around downtown, and that comes down to how it grew. Back in the nineteenth century, the area was split between two small farming settlements named Cass and Lace, complete with stagecoach stops, a blacksmith, and a local creamery. Postwar suburban growth gradually connected the two, and residents officially voted to incorporate as Darien in 1969. You can still spot bits of that heritage today, especially at the restored 1925 Old Lace Schoolhouse sitting near the corner of Cass Avenue and 75th Street.

With around 22,000 residents, the city offers a classic, leafy suburban feel. Most homes sit along quiet, tree-lined subdivision streets tucked away from the main traffic corridors. Everyday shopping and dining cluster around 75th Street and Cass Avenue, making errands straightforward no matter which pocket of town you settle into. You get plenty of green space as well, with seventeen local parks scattered throughout the community. If you are house hunting, keep in mind that school district lines vary across town, so it pays to double-check the specific school boundaries for each neighborhood.

Along the southern border, Darien meets a unique neighbor in Argonne National Laboratory, a major federal research facility that draws scientists and engineers from all over the world. Getting around the broader Chicago area is straightforward from here, thanks to fast access to both Interstate 55 and Interstate 355. While Darien does not have its own Metra train station, commuters frequently catch trains into downtown Chicago from nearby stops in Westmont, Downers Grove, or Clarendon Hills, using local Pace buses or a quick drive to connect.

Outdoor recreation is one of the biggest perks of living here, largely thanks to Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve. This massive 2,500-acre open space features nearly eleven miles of trails winding through woods, prairies, and scenic savannas, making it a favorite weekend destination for local runners, hikers, and cyclists. For indoor athletics, the Darien Sportsplex serves as a lively hub with three ice rinks and indoor turf fields. It adds up to a comfortable, well-rounded western suburb where quiet residential living comes with great parks and unbeatable trail access right in your backyard.
