Dayton, MT

Dayton is a Lake County census-designated place on the northwest shore of Flathead Lake, north of Big Arm, with 104 residents in the 2020 census. U.S. Route 93 runs along the northern and western edges, carrying travelers about 30 miles north to Kalispell and 22 miles south to Polson, the county seat. The community’s water side opens toward the lake and Wild Horse Island, while the highway supplies the route to the rest of the west shore. Dayton is an unincorporated lakeshore place with a resort-town scale and a rural county setting.

Dayton began two miles inland, then moved to the lakeshore after the Flathead Indian Reservation opened to homesteading in 1910. The old settlement became Proctor when the post office moved, leaving two names on the local map. Dayton’s early growth came through homesteading, logging, and lake travel; the Dayton Hotel once hosted railroad baron Cornelius Vanderbilt. Today the community is a launch point for sailing and trips to Wild Horse Island State Park, and it is home to Mission Mountain Winery, Montana’s first bonded winery.
