Dorset, VT

Dorset is a Bennington County town spread across several villages and mountain valleys, with U.S. 7 through the eastern side and Vermont 30 running south toward Manchester. The town was chartered in 1761, and marble shaped its nineteenth-century economy. East Dorset grew around quarries, mills, a marble company, and the railroad; stone work and quarry employment left their mark on houses, sidewalks, mill races, and village streets. The 2020 census counted 2,133 people across the town, including Dorset, East Dorset, South Dorset, and North Dorset.

That quarry history is still visible in the landscape and institutions. The Dorset Marble Quarry is now a water-filled site with seasonal public access, while the Dorset Historical Society keeps local records from the town’s 1761 charter through the present. East Dorset’s Wilson House marks the birthplace of William Griffith Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the Griffith Library sits nearby. Emerald Lake State Park lies along the Route 7 corridor, giving the town another large piece of the local map. Dorset has a working-town past, a spread-out village pattern, and present-day life that moves between year-round residents, seasonal households, arts, outdoor access, and nearby Manchester.
