Eagan, MN

Employment is spread among large properties near Interstate 35E, Interstate 494, and other regional roads. Eagan developed one of the Twin Cities' notable corporate-campus concentrations, with Thomson Reuters, Prime Therapeutics, Ecolab, UPS, and other firms. Hybrid work has altered that map. Thomson Reuters kept its Wescott Road manufacturing plant but moved its headquarters elsewhere in Eagan to share a building with Prime Therapeutics. At the end of 2025, demolition was complete on the former Thomson Reuters campus, a 3.2-million-square-foot Amazon distribution center was under construction, and an existing data center was being repurposed. Cedar Grove station provides Red Line bus rapid transit to the Mall of America, while Minnesota Valley Transit Authority routes connect Eagan with both downtowns and several local employment sites. Eagan's suburban landscape rests on a much older river history.

Black Dog village, a Mdewakanton Dakota community named for its chief, stood along the Minnesota River before Eagan Township was organized. The township began in 1860 with 567 residents and took the name of Patrick Eagan, its first town-board supervisor. Farming then dominated for generations. From about 1840 through 1930, growers produced and shipped enough onions for Eagan to be called the Onion Capital of the United States. The city incorporated in 1974 with about 17,000 residents, as fields were rapidly becoming neighborhoods, roads, and business sites. Corporate campuses and subdivisions now occupy much of the landscape created by that shift. The preserved Holz Farm still records the agricultural period, and the city's account of Black Dog village keeps the earlier Dakota community in public memory. Two large destinations give different parts of Eagan a regional role.

The TCO Performance Center at Viking Lakes is the Minnesota Vikings' headquarters and training facility, and its training camp brings spectators onto the campus each year. Football operations, offices, and public practice sessions have created a distinctive newer use on land once associated with farms and low-density development. Lebanon Hills Regional Park preserves a different scale of open land. The Dakota County park covers almost 2,000 acres in Eagan and neighboring Apple Valley, with lakes, year-round trails, environmental education, equipment rental, and a campground. Its visitor center is in Eagan. A staged county project is scheduled to begin with west-section vegetation work in August 2026 and middle-section trail construction in fall 2026; later restoration and trail phases extend through 2029. The park gives nearby neighborhoods access to a substantial woods-and-lakes landscape within the developed southern metro. Eagan's current cultural spaces also carry its transition from farming into the present.

The new Eagan Art House opened to the public in June 2025 in Patrick Eagan Park. The 10,000-square-foot building has gallery space, pottery studios, classrooms, and programs in printmaking, fiber arts, fused glass, bookmaking, and other media. Across town, Holz Farm preserves an 80-acre farmstead settled in the 1870s. The Holz family retained it until 1993; after a resident campaign, the city purchased the property in 1995 as a living-history site. Its programs interpret farm life from the Great Depression through World War II and include seasonal public events. In a city once known nationally for onion shipments, the farm that residents kept from subdivision and the art center opened inside a park provide two concrete places to gather, learn, and make things.
