About East Barre
East Barre is a census-designated place in the Town of Barre, a named village in the same central Vermont landscape as Graniteville and Websterville. The town's granite industry brought quarry work, rail lines, and new homes into these villages in the late 1800s, and East Barre grew as one of the local settlements along that network. The East Barre Dam, built on the Jail Branch of the Winooski after the 1927 flood, adds an engineering landmark to the community's story. East Barre still has a small commercial center and one of Barre Town's fire stations. It is a village-sized place whose map is shaped by granite, water control, and town services.
