East Middlebury, VT

East Middlebury grew at the point where the Middlebury River leaves a gorge and meets the flatter Otter Creek Valley. Jonathan Foot began developing the river area in 1790, and the settlement’s position at the west end of the route over Middlebury Gap brought a store, inn, and branch of the Vermont Glass Factory by 1812. The 2020 census counted 426 residents. The Middlebury River remains the defining line, with the gorge, a Route 125 crossing, and the village’s older mill geography shaping the place.

Today East Middlebury is a census-designated place within the town of Middlebury, in Addison County. The river changes character after leaving the gorge, flowing into the Champlain Valley, while the nearby Middlebury River watershed supports swimming, fishing, and boating. Old mill sites and newer river uses meet in the same narrow corridor today. East Middlebury feels like a small settlement built at a hinge: mountain route behind it, valley ahead, and a river doing the connecting.
