Ekalaka, MT

Tucked away in the rolling plains of southeastern Montana, Ekalaka is a quiet ranching community of around 400 people that serves as the heart of Carter County. Cattle ranching and agriculture drive the local economy, giving the town a grounded Western character where neighbors quickly become familiar faces. The town gets its distinctive name from Ijkalaka, an Oglala Lakota woman who lived in the area before the first post office opened in the late 1800s. As the county seat, it provides essential services, local schools, and a peaceful, slow-paced lifestyle surrounded by wide-open prairie.

For a small town, Ekalaka has a surprising amount to explore. Main Street is home to the Carter County Museum, Montana’s first county museum and a popular stop on the Montana Dinosaur Trail thanks to incredible regional fossil discoveries. Just 11 miles north, Medicine Rocks State Park features striking sandstone formations and dramatic night skies that have drawn visitors and held cultural importance for generations. Daily life in town revolves around school sports, summer afternoons at the Emswiler Pool, and community events that bring everyone together throughout the year.
