Elba, NY

Elba is a small, quiet community in northern Genesee County, sitting just a few minutes north of Batavia. Home to around 2,100 residents, the town centers on a charming village surrounded by wide stretches of open farmland. State Routes 98 and 262 intersect right in the middle of town, giving locals an easy drive into Batavia for grocery runs, dining, and medical care, while keeping both Rochester and Buffalo within commuting distance.

Farming is at the heart of local life, thanks to the rich, dark muck soil spread across the surrounding flats. Drained from wetlands generations ago, these fertile fields make Elba one of the most productive onion-growing capitals in the region, supporting major agricultural operations like Torrey Farms alongside dairy and vegetable growers. The onion fields are such a signature part of town that Harry Truman jokingly referred to it as “Smell-ba” during a 1948 campaign stop, a piece of local folklore residents still share with a smile.

That farming heritage takes center stage every August at the annual Onion Festival, where neighbors gather for parades, food, and the crowning of the Onion Queen to support the volunteer fire department. For families looking at the area, the Elba Central School District serves local kids on a single, close-knit campus near the village center. Between the scenic country roads, friendly neighborhood feel, and easy access to nearby cities, Elba offers a comfortable, down-to-earth rural lifestyle.
