Elephant Head, AZ

Elephant Head is a Pima County CDP in the desert country south of Tucson, near the Elephant Head landmark and the roads linking Amado, Green Valley, and Sahuarita. The community sits in a dry mountain-and-valley setting where summer heat, monsoon storms, dust, and water use are part of ordinary planning. Homes and open parcels spread along local roads, while Interstate 19 provides the main north-south route through the Santa Cruz Valley.

The landscape supports more than a residential map. Pima County’s Elephant Head/Anza Trailhead, on Elephant Head Road near Canoa Ranch, gives hikers, riders, and mountain bikers access to the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail. School service is divided between Continental Elementary and Sahuarita Unified, tying the CDP to nearby communities for education and daily errands. Residents look toward Green Valley, Amado, and the Tucson area for larger services, while the desert remains the immediate setting for work, recreation, wildlife, and weather. Elephant Head’s character comes from that edge condition: a small settlement with a rural address, a well-known mountain name, and a trail landscape that reaches back through southern Arizona’s travel history.
