About Estral Beach

Estral Beach is a Monroe County village on the northwest shore of Lake Erie, where Swan Creek reaches the lake. The village sits on the southern edge of Berlin Charter Township, about eight miles south of the Detroit River mouth and roughly thirteen miles northeast of Monroe. A canal, shoreline dikes, and the creek mouth all shape the local map. Even the name is geographic in spirit: Estral comes from the Spanish word for star.

The community began as a small shoreline resort area after the turn of the twentieth century and incorporated as a village in 1925. Its present-day landscape still revolves around water, with village roads meeting Lake Erie, Swan Creek, and the canal that connects them. The Strong Unit of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge extends into the northern part of the village, adding protected wetland and river habitat to the shoreline picture. Estral Beach is a compact Lake Erie place whose history and infrastructure both follow the water.
