Falls Village, CT

Falls Village is Canaan’s village center, a census-designated place on the Housatonic River where Great Falls gives the place its name and its sound. The river’s drop supplied water power for saw, grist, fulling, paper, and iron works; in 1833 Ames Iron Works opened at the falls and produced wheels and axles for locomotives, steamboat shafts, and Civil War cannon. The Housatonic railroad arrived in 1841, and the station name “Falls Village” stuck. The industrial map is still readable in the old canal walls and the 1914 hydroelectric plant, which remains in use.

Today, the waterfall remains the easiest bearing. The river corridor follows the Salisbury town line, Canaan School District serves local students, and the Falls Village–Canaan Historical Society meets at the Depot or Meetinghouse. The depot, meetinghouse, and falls keep the village’s history close to its current map. Falls Village sits where Connecticut’s iron country, a working river, and a small New England village center meet; its most distinctive everyday marker is still water moving through the old power landscape.
