Fort Belknap Agency, MT

Fort Belknap Agency is a census-designated place in Blaine County, Montana, and the headquarters of the Fort Belknap Indian Community on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. The 2020 census counted 1,567 residents. The Milk River forms the community’s northern edge, with broad north-central Montana plains and river bottoms stretching around the agency. Students attend public schools in Harlem, while Aaniiih Nakoda College gives the reservation a nearby higher-education institution. The agency’s location remains central to reservation life.

The agency’s name comes from Fort Belknap, a nineteenth-century military post on the Milk River. After the post closed, the location became a government agency for the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine people, and the reservation’s modern community grew around that role. Today the Fort Belknap Indian Community’s offices, tribal services, college, and cultural life connect the place to both the Aaniiih and Nakoda Nations. Fort Belknap Agency is less a conventional town than a reservation headquarters, a river community, and a center of governance on the Montana prairie.
