Fort Defiance, AZ

Fort Defiance sits on the Defiance Plateau in the Navajo Nation, about four miles north of Window Rock. It is a community where Navajo government, education, health care, and military history meet. The U.S. Army established the post in 1851 after Colonel John Washington had passed through the area, and the site later became a Navajo Agency. That history is inseparable from the violence of U.S. campaigns, the Navajo Long Walk, and the forced removal to Bosque Redondo, so the old fort name carries a heavy history alongside the present-day community.

Today, Fort Defiance is part of the Window Rock area's civic and service network. The Fort Defiance Chapter handles local matters and community projects, while the Navajo Nation's larger institutions, the hospital, and schools serve people from across the agency area. Window Rock Unified schools include Window Rock Elementary, Tséhootsooí Middle School, and Window Rock High School. The surrounding plateau is high, open country, but the place remains closely connected to the Nation's political life: Window Rock is near enough for government offices, ceremonies, health care, and everyday family connections to overlap. Fort Defiance feels rooted in Diné country and in the responsibilities of a regional center.
