Fortine, MT

Fortine is a census-designated place in northeastern Lincoln County, Montana, in the valley of Fortine Creek. The 2021 count listed 206 residents. U.S. Route 93 passes through the community, leading northwest about 11 miles to Eureka and southeast toward Whitefish. Fortine was named for early settler Octave Fortin and grew as a station on the Great Northern Railway line. Its map is a long valley corridor, with the highway and creek carrying the same northwestern Montana sense of direction.

Fortine Creek flows northwest into the Tobacco River, which joins the Kootenai River and ultimately the Columbia system. Deep Creek and Murphy Creek meet the Fortine valley from the east and southeast, adding small waterways to the larger drainage picture. Forested hills and ranch country surround the homes and businesses along Route 93, while Eureka supplies the nearest larger town center. Fortine is a place where a railway name became a community name, and where the creek, highway, and river system still tell you how the settlement fits into Lincoln County.
