Gila Crossing, AZ

Gila Crossing is a Maricopa County census-designated place inside the Gila River Indian Community, south of Komatke and on the Phoenix metro's southern edge. The 2020 census counted 636 residents. The Gila River gives the community its name and its geography, with Santa Cruz across the river in Pinal County. Gila Crossing sits in a desert valley where tribal land, metro roads, and the river corridor meet.

The school arrangement is part of what makes the place distinctive. Gila Crossing is not assigned to a conventional school district; Gila Crossing Community School, a K-8 Bureau of Indian Education school, is in neighboring Komatke. The community's daily map reaches across that boundary, while roads north lead toward Phoenix and the river leads south toward the older agricultural landscape. The river is still the clearest landmark on the map in town. Gila Crossing is small in census terms, but its setting is tied to a much larger tribal community and river system.
