Glencoe, IL

A 385-acre living plant museum sits inside Glencoe, a village with only 3.72 square miles of land. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s main campus contains 28 gardens and four natural areas, with restored habitats occupying more than half its acreage. That regional institution is a substantial presence in a lakefront North Shore community that had 8,849 residents in the 2020 census. Glencoe incorporated in 1869, and its wooded ravines later drew some notable architectural experiments. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the ravine-edge William A. Glasner House in 1905; beginning in 1911, he also prepared a broader suburban scheme for attorney Sherman Booth that included residences and civic infrastructure, though only part of the plan was realized. Daily recreation changes sharply with the season. In summer, Glencoe Beach provides supervised swimming, a sprayground, volleyball, and rentals for paddleboards, kayaks, and sailboats; the adjacent boating beach offers sailing and long-term small-craft storage.

During winter, the Weinberg Family Recreation Center operates two lighted outdoor refrigerated rinks for figure skating, hockey, and open skating. In warmer months, those same rink surfaces become pickleball and Dek hockey courts, while neighboring Watts Park supplies tennis, disc golf, soccer, and a sledding hill. The nine-mile Green Bay Trail follows a former interurban rail corridor through Glencoe and neighboring North Shore communities, with access at the Metra lot and Shelton Park. The village’s Metra station serves the Union Pacific North line, placing rail beside the trail and the compact center along Green Bay Road. Free 2026 park-district programs included children’s lawn concerts, Green Bay Trail Day, a July 4 family program, and an outdoor movie at the beach. Lake access, commuter rail, the public garden, and facilities that change uses with the weather give local routines a distinctly seasonal shape.
