About Grant Park
Grant Park is a Kankakee County village on the old Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad line, incorporated in 1883. The 2020 census counted 1,294 residents. The railroad helped put the village on the map, but weather has left the stronger mark in local memory. A fire tore through town in 1884, a 1912 tornado destroyed homes and barns, and another tornado in 1948 caused deaths and major damage on the north side.
Grant Park kept rebuilding, which is why the village’s story feels less like a list of disasters and more like a record of stubborn continuity. The local schools run from preschool through high school, with the Dragons and green-and-gold colors carrying across the district. Main streets, farm roads, and village services still gather around the same northeastern Kankakee County setting. Grant Park is a small railroad village whose history includes fires and tornadoes, but the everyday picture is school mornings, farm country, and people putting the pieces back in place.
