Granville, NY

Granville is a village on New York’s eastern edge, fully surrounded by the Town of Granville and pressed against the Vermont line. The 2020 village population was 2,404. The Mettawee River runs through the valley, and the village sits where NY 149 and NY 22 meet the Slate Valley’s border roads. That position gives Granville a two-state daily map: Vermont is across the line, while Washington County’s farms, hills, and small industrial sites fill the New York side. The village is the compact civic and commercial center inside that wider rural town.

Granville’s slate industry shaped both its streets and its work. Quarrying began in the region in the mid-1800s, and the village’s colored slate became its signature trade; quarries in the wider Slate Valley still produce most of the colored roofing slate made in the United States. The valley’s stone comes in green, gray, purple, red, and mottled colors, which is why the industrial past shows up in building material as well as museum displays.
